Today Mountain Equipment Co-op announced that they will be building a new flagship store in Southeast False Creek. They actually said that it will be in the “Olympic Village,” but as the location is the row of buildings on the northeast corner of Quebec Street and East 2nd Avenue I feel that is a bit of a stretch.

The new building will be three levels and a total of 60,000 square feet. The store will be 45,000 square feet over two levels, with the 3rd floor of office space to be used by MEC as well as other businesses.

The new accessible and green store will replace the existing store at 130 West Broadway, where MEC moved to in 1995.  Proscenium Architecture & Interiors, which designed North Vancouver MEC store, and the company’s new headquarters down the road on Great Northern Way, will be leading the design on the new flagship store as well.

The site, which is owned by Beedie Development Group, was widely expected to turn into another condominium development. Residents of the adjacent Mecanica building will be relieved that their views to the south will be safe.  Some area residents are concerned about traffic flow and congestion in an area that is already a bottle-neck at certain times of the day.

The development application was submitted to city hall today, construction is expected to start in early 2017, with the grand opening in mid-2018.
