False Creek Seawall Closure Starting Next Week
South False Creek Seawall Improvement Project
The ongoing South False Creek Seawall Improvement Project is back on track after taking the summer off. Starting October 10th the seawall will be entirely closed between Alder Bay Walk and Greenchain. Of course, that means nothing to most people as these are the streets that intersect with the seawall and hardly anyone lives on them. I have created a map to help you out. You can click on the lines and markers to learn more about the changes coming to the different sections of the seawall.
In short they will be continuing with twinning the seawall by adding a separate cycling path from Alder Bay Walk through Charleson Park. This will also include the loss of some trees, the planting of some new trees, and adding a fence to separate the new cycling path from the off-leash area of Charleson Park. More details below the map.
Also in the map are the cycling and walking detours.
Here is what they will be doing for the next 6 months of so:
Improvements through Charleson Park to Greenchain
• Completing the new 3.0m asphalt path along the north edge of Charleson Park and
installing pathway lighting;
• Building a low split rail fence between the dog park and the new bike path;
• Planting 12 new trees
• Relocating and replacing park benches.
Improvements from The Castings to Charleson Park
• Replacing 3.0m of flagstone paving on the south side of Ironwork Passage with
asphalt. There will be no changes to the flagstone plaza at the north end of Forge
Walk;
• Building a new 4.5m walking path across the grass area that runs parallel to the
Spruce Harbour Marina bridge, ending west of the marina utility buildings;
• Relocating a bench and two concrete planters west of the marina utility buildings;
• Replacing pathway lighting with poles and fixtures like those installed in Sutcliffe
Park this spring.
Improvements from Alder Bay Walk to The Castings
• Removing the wooden terrace at the foot of Alder Bay Walk and replacing it with a
landscaped hill;
• Resurfacing the seawall from Alder Bay Walk to The Castings with 3.0m paving
stones on the north half and 3.0m asphalt on the south side, separated by a new
median with trees and benches;
• Planting 17 new cherry trees to replace those removed this spring;
• Replacing pathway lighting with poles and fixtures like those installed in Sutcliffe
Park this spring;
• Removing the brick walls where The Castings connects to the seawall.
